What about if you spread it out? Wouldn't the cane be the same?

the cane is well mulched and the pieces are not hollow sections
but the hay is not mulched it is 'shredded' (meaning cut at a certain average length cross wise) - hence you need to take further measures to ensure no mites hide in the hollow hay pieces
I prefer hay as it is readily available here = farm and we bale each year
I spread out a couple of biscuits of hay at a time and run them over with the mower to reduce it to small pieces before using it
but I do ensure there is a powder in the hay
you can sprinkle Sulphur around in the hay instead of Pestene but with both you need to be aware that mites may still be present albiet in small numbers and that you will need to treat the birds, the pens and the nest boxes regularly = regardless of what you use in the nest box/pen

The sugar can is good and it smells nice and even better foe the garden after the chooks have pooped all over it

Well so far I love the cane the chooks don't eat it and it they have not scratched it out of the boxes so very happy
