I'm in the process of converting an old carport into a coop/run. It has a concrete floor & I've read a bit about the deep litter method. What would be a good litter to use on the run, I intend to eventually use it as compost on our vege patch. When feeding the chickens would it be ok to throw grain/pellets on the floor of the run & let them pich through the straw/mulch for it.
Thanks Shaun

I have a layer of river sand, then non toxic wood shavings or non toxic sawdust, on top of that there is either hay or straw or both, whatever is available from our local stockfeed.

I always change the hay and straw when it gets too wet, so that it doesn't get mouldy. Wet, damp and mouldy living conditions are bad for the health of your poultry.

The top layer of straw and hay and droppings, go around around the rose bushes or trees as mulch, or the neighbour's take it for their veggie patches, or it goes into the compost bin to break down with the aid of worm castings.

I give only scatter a handful or two of scratch, so that the chooks can have a scratch around, and use feeders that hang off a chain, which I remove at night when they are roosting. Uneaten feed on the ground and feed overnight attracts the wee beasties :( I use pet bowls for their treats of veggies, fruit etc and a separate small feeder with grit.

Thanks for the info. It's a bit complicated to start, especially when you haven't got a clue what you're doing.

Shaun,

Did you decide against the flat pack coop and run? Don't worry, we all start somewhere and this is a great place to learn! There are lots of people here with experience to help!

It's very important not to let mould develop in the straw,or, hay and not to leave too much feed lying around, we remove our feed and any left overs at night, the untouched left overs get thrown out. Depending on the weather, we change straw/hay often, so there isn't a build up of droppings in a confined space and it goes directly around the garden as mulch or in the compost.

I'm still going to get a flat pack coop but the run it came with didn't seem big enough to me for 6 chickens. There's already an old carport in the yard that doesn't get used. So far I've covered 3 sides in wire, but I still have to do the front side where the door will be. The carport is 11 square metres so from what I've read that is adequate for 11 chickens. We're only going to get 6 so they'll have plenty of room & if we decide down the track to expand a bit it shouldn't be a problem.

Can you just purchase the coop without the run?

The converted carport sounds great!

Hi

I would cover in the side/end on the prevailing wind side to prevent the rain blowing in and wetting the deep litter. The deep litter must be kept dry or you will spend all your time replaceing it at great expence in time and money. In a well maintained deep litter you should only need to change it or top it up two or three times a year not weekly or monthly. Dont use hay or straw use none toxic wood shavings and peatmoss.

Hi Ian. I was wondering why straw or hay is not such a good idea. What is peatmoss, where do you get it & what does it do. It should stay fairly dry as besides the roof it has a wall on the west side & a fence on the north.
