How soon can you use fresh chook poop of the garden? Do I have to let it sit for a certain time before I can use it?

It is advisable to allow the fresh manure to dry before use.
When you do it should be well dug in and not heaped close to stems as it can burn.
It also needs to be kept moist or again it will burn plant stems.
There is not much better for encouraging plants to grow, I have always given the explanation that the plants grow to get away from it as it can be rather pungent on the nose.
It can be composted through a worm farm but not if the fowls have been wormed recently as commercial wormers will kill ALL worms and wormfarms can also be killed off, just take care.

I'd like to add that it might be a good idea to keep your chook poop out of the sun while it is ageing ( a lot of goodness is leached out by Ra).
Cheers.

So should I cover it with black plastic while it dries out?

Thanks to you both

You could leave the the poop in the pen and throw some chaff or straw over the poop, that way the chooks can scratch away at the straw at the same time keeping the poop loose and friable. Also you end up with an even better fertiliser/mulch.

If you don't cover it you will breed lots of flies especially from now on so I would suggest you do cover it well as a pile of poo is the perfect breeding ground for flies
