Nothing wrong with kids names for chooks. Our first two birds were called Whitey and Blackie because that was their colours when the five year old first brought them home from kinder.

lol, I know a cat called Blackie, named by a 4yo :D

The 12yo made a good case for Hedwig - not only do they look similar (google shows me this is true), but also Hedwig is a girls name - so quite apt, she says.

I sent that photo to my husband at work, and he replied saying "They are gorgeous!" - haha, so much for him not being keen on getting chooks in the first place

REALLY a shame you're not closer I have a couple of blue leghorns from my last hatch I need to sell too. I really need to put an entry in the for sale section. :)

This is my moulting light sussex. Hiding in the trees 'cause she's embarrassed by her nakedness. sidesplit.gif Her name is Pearl.

She is gorgeous! I had never seen blue leghorns before but I might look into those at some stage. I am only allowed 4 chooks here but I am sure I can stretch that to 5... ;)

It really was a shame we arent closer, but I am sure you will find someone happy to take them.

And why not??? Are there any strict naming gender guide lines that one must adhere to in life?

Pope John Paul II's real name was Karol, did anyone make fun of that? John Wayne's real name was Marion...

Yes, especially for chickens as they get easily confused. You can't be the rooster, the alpha male of your flock, when your name is Helen! How are you going to get any respect that way??? I asks ya.

I'm not sure that too many people made fun of John Wayne's real name, at least not to his face.

NB. No disrespect intended to anyone named Helen.

APOLOGIES [smilie=sorry.gif]

Ron Weasley's first owl was named Pigwidgeon (also known as "Pig") who was a White-Faced Scops owl, or Otus leucotis.

Errol was actually the Weasley family's Great Grey Owl, or Strix nebulosa.

Hermes was Percy Weasley's owl, a Screech Owl, or Megascops kennicotti, a gift when Percy became prefect of Gryffindor at Hogwarts.

^ LOL!!! The finer details of the Weasleys owls, never thought I would see that here on the forum!

In regard to names, I think loads of names can suit either a boy or a girl (strange modern "trendy" names not included). My son has what other people would regard as an unusual name at best, at worst - a girls name. He is named after his great grandfather but thats not something I care to stand there and explain when people give me a weird look when I tell them his name (or as one woman did, tell me she wanted my sons name, not my daughters).

Errol wouldnt be something I name anything, only because I knew an Errol growing up lol. Erryl/e could work for a girl.

As for our un-named chook... the 3yo doesnt seem to grasp the concept of giving something a name, so in her honour we have named the hen "Bagee" (Ba-gee, not Bag-ee). When she was younger we tried teaching her how to make chicken noises, but all she would say was "Beggo-bagee" hahaha.
