Thanks all :-D

The only problem we have discovered is that if the chooks manage to get on the roof they can get out :o Not having had Dorkings before, we are discovering they can get quite a height even with one wing clipped! We are looking at ways to get around this now - may need to bring some sort of cover out from the roof so they can't get from the verandah railing to the roof.

We do plan to breed them - that was the reason for getting a trio and I got an incubator for Christmas :-D The weather is too unpredictable at the moment and they haven't started laying yet.

G'day Karen , clip both wings . Dorkings are the best flyers. Decades ago they couldn't have flown over a sixpence due to their size, nowadays they are much lighter and hence better at flight, all the better to get away from predators.

Hi Purefeather,

Not trying to contradict you but I've always heard you are supposed to clip only one wing in order to unbalance the birds as they fly and that clipping both wings wouldn't have the same unbalancing effect. Is that not strictly correct?

I can imagine of course clipping the feathers sufficiently to remove the ability to lift off altogether, is that what you're indicating? If so, how much of the feather would you have to clip, and is that obvious when the chook has it's wings folded?

WW - I just copied the location in the web address box and pasted it into the post. How are you doing it?

Karen - I have a problem with flyers too. The second last batch of chicks has taken to sleeping on the fence of their enclosure. I'll have to try and get a photo.
Hopefully when the Australorps are full size they'll be too heavy. They do try and go back into their yard in the morning. Barry the rooster is checking out the new blood and they're keeping their distance. sidesplit.gif

I did the same thing and inserted it between the URL tags provided at the top of the reply box. Nevermind, it's only a small matter.

G'day Wickedwings, it depends on the bird and age as mentioned above. I've found that with a lot of birds, clipping one wing isn't enough. It will make it more difficult for flight but I've seen birds half fly half climb their way over a fence. Hope this is of some assistance.

We have made the internal fence higher between the two pens which seems to have made a difference - so far so good :-D The aracaunas are getting up a good height two but their pen is fully enclosed with shade cloth over the top ;)

We are keeping a close eye on all of them. They seem to like their new house and we got our first Dorking egg yesterday!
