Silly question, how do they work? Do you have to teach the chookies how to use them?

There is a timer that is powered by the solar panel and when it is time for the chookies to go out the door the door goes up by the cord that is pulled and wound around some cog or something like that. I really didn't study the workings of it, but it was demonstrated to me.

Thank you, kindly 52.gif Chickababe,

Does the door close again after a certain period of time? What is a chookie is left behind inside, can she get out?

Sorry for so many questions, it is all very interesting, but does it open again when they go home to roost and close again behind them and what about the stragglers?

Hello PP,
the door will open at the time you preset on the timer device in the morning and will stay open until the preset time in the evening is reached. I think that you would need to make sure you set the time say 20 to 30 mins after sundown just to make sure all the partying chookies do eventually go to bed. Our Peaches is the party chookie. She will even get out of bed and come to greet me when I am supposed to be locking the door. Then I have to encourage her to go up te ladder to bed.

Sounds seriously fabulous!

The Pretty One used to be a party girl, be the last one out and fly on top of the Aframe, then she became a mother. Now she is the first one in the door and clucks to Lady Frances to come in as she knows all about the "foxy-whiskered gentleman" with "black prick ears and sandy-coloured whiskers" that took the girls next door away...

Does the door shut slowly so the chooks can get out of the way and not get chopped? My hens are not very bright so they would stand in the door way harhar!

Hi, I have made a couple of automatic doors. They are a lot of work to make and parts alone amount to close to $200.
I have seen them recently on ebay for not much more than $200 ready to go.I wouldn't bother to do it again even though it works a treat.opens the door at 7.30am and closes at 5.45pm.If you want to give it a go I can supply a parts list but you will need a reasonable understanding of electronics to wire it up.

Yes the door is slow when opening and shutting, so no chookies will get stuck in the door.

Some chookies just don't get the idea do they.

Hello bergy, thanks for the offer but I haven't a clue with electronics.
