Nesting boxes

HI Dean's Poultry,

You asked what I use for a nesting box for mother hen. I use plastic storage containers. I also use that for my sussex, storage boxes with the front cut out. I use a jigsaw to cut the front out. I like these as they are really easy to clean really well being plastic.

For the bantam I use plasic drums that I have cut down as well. Great recycling idea that one. Again really easy to clean really well.

Hi CL, yep i cut the plastic drums down too :-D

I like your idea of using the storage containers and cutting the front out. They go for about 5 bux in the cheap shops in town :-D

My broody hen is in a cut-down square 20L water/liquid storage container.

Like County Lodge, I used a jig saw. I then lined it with nesting straw as I didn't have wood shavings then.

They are also great for hygiene & they do not harbor parasites, just a light disinfect after each sitting.

I went to the tip shop and found a couple of frames from a shelf.
Hubby put them together and screwed sheeting on then I painted it . The lid is plywood.
All recycled gear.

That's the sort of stuff I like. Be creative.

You want visitors to say stuff like, "Is that really a TV set in your chook pen?" or when they ask "Got anything good in your fridge?", you reply, "Yep. It's actually an incubator and I have 80 something eggs about to hatch". :shock:

yes agree---recycle----my nests range from old chorine drums, metal oil drums to old desks, chests of drawers that I remove alternate drawers---they seem to really like them, cheers pam

I use big plastic garden pots get them in bilk from tip recyclers
Chooks love em and the duck is one now
