We have a large carrier already to bring 2 of our 3 new chickens home, but it has a solid floor. Rather than just a box for the third, I thought I might invest in a wire carrier then, should the need arise, it can serve as a sin bin or, with the tray in and straw etc, also serve as a sick bay. I've seen dog crates suggested. How big should it be? We will have standard chooks - the biggest would likely be the Australorp. Obviously the price goes up with size.

I found this one:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/42-Collapsib ... 3a77206839

106cmL x 71cmW x 77cmH

Their next sizes down are:
91L x 60W x 66H
or
76L x 53W x 59H

Would that last one be big enough for a sin bin or sick bay? Or am I best to stretch to the bigger one?

Thanks for your views!!

You can never be short of different types of accommodation for chookies, especially emergency accommodation, if they become ill or even broody or even for a nursery for chicks.

Shop around and compare prices as the prices vary for the same items. Medium to large are good cage sizes you can still out them in the house. I also have a of medium rabbit hutch.

With a sick bay you want less room as opposed to more room keeping them quiet and not moving much conserves energy and aids in their recovery. I think the 91L x 60W x 66H would be your better option. Just to add if you use a cage as a sick bay you should never use it to carry healthy fowls even if you clean it well it should still only be used as a sick bay

What disinfectant should be used to clean a sick cage after use?

I plan on disinfecting it with Virkon S after I use it each time.

ES - I see your point about not using it, regardless, for a healthy chicken after sick bay use, so I figure I will buy one for carrying home, possibly broody sin bin - and if I ever use it for a sick bay I will get a replacement for carrier/sin bin use.

Thanks to you and PP for your advice!

Karrian,
Do you order them in from the States or is there an australian supplier?
