Rooster Night Box

Amir i thought i would put this thread here just so we don't go off topic :lol:

Are your night boxes smaller than the rooster itself :?:

The main reason i'm asking is cause i was told to make sure the rooster can't stretch out at all, thus he can't crow as he needs to stretch. I've been watching my little bantam x ckl for the past couple of days (hes learning to crow now) he has to really do the stretching thing before he opens his mouth.

I have a nest box in each coope (i have 2 coopes) that i'm going to put doors on today, they are big enough for the roos to sleep comfy but there is now way they can stretch in any way

I guess the only thing i'm going to have to learn is diliegence (spellin) when it comes to letting them in and out every day :roll:

I guess i'm about to find out today if this solution really does work [smilie=seeker.gif]

Kylie there are a lot of 'myths' abt roosters and crowing - I've been told they will perch as high as they can get and if their head hits the roof when they stretch they wont crow :roll:

NEVER stopped ANY of mine. Next I tried out the old myth of confining them in boxes where they cant stretch :roll:

NEVER worked for mine :lol:

- so when we lived in suburbia we constructed a special room under the house - sound proofed it and kept the boys [all 9 of them in there = no one heard them] Oh!! :lol:

except for the one AH neighbour 2 doors down that could hear a camel in Arabia burping of course[actually thinking of the other end 'burping' :oops:

]. I never worked out how she EVER slept :lol:

I recommend sound proof night boxes [if you dont want to hear them at all] just big enough for them to sit and turn around in but not necessarily stand in - just so long as they are comfortable. So I think you will find 'diligence' will pay off with the conversion of the nesting boxes and putting the 'boys' away each night

I agree 100% with soozorps

you can't stop a rooster crowing no mater what you do (unless you can somehow tell it that it'll become dinner if it doesn't be quiet :lol:

) but even if it can't lift its head to crow it'll still crow :roll:

When i made a night box i was told to make it pitch black so the rooster didnt know that it was dawn so there for didnt crow, until i let him out.....this worked for me

My roosters crow on a pitch black night at 3.00am in the morning well before there is even a hint of light int he sky. :shock:

It doesn't bother me as I don't seem to hear it but poor hubby does and he is the HEAVY sleeper.

Yep same CL, ours start at about 4.
We had a rooster that used to camp in the carport at night. If you went outside into the carport and forgot to turn the light off it would crow and it could be 7 o'clock at night :shock:

We also don't seem to here the roosters in the morning :-D

Hi Kylie,

I'm one of those who believed that roosters wouldn't crow if they couldn't stretch their necks, however I now know they can crow in any amount of space! :roll:

I still shut mine up every night, and let them out every morning, and I do think that they don't start as early in the boxes - and are at least muffled a bit when they do crow.

Still worth a try if the crowing is a problem.

We were given a silkie roo about 8 mths ago ( he was beautiful) and had to give him away 3 days later as he started to crow at 3 am and did it evey half hour all day long :roll:

neighbours weren't happy jans at all :evil:

I don't atcually mind the crowing, after a while i would think you get used to it :lol:

its more the neighbours calling the police or concil than anything else :roll:

I already have a couple of ckls, one is just learning to crow (hes not that loud as hes very small) and the others are a little young atm.

We've just turned one of the pekin nest boxes into a roo box and lined it with cardboard. I guess i'll know in the morning how loud its going to be and if it makes a difference locking him up..

just dont forget to put them in the shed or garage as well. just a night box wont be enough to muffle the sound.
