I like the wood because on the cold mornings I know they can hold some heat to help the hens I think the metal would get very cold and may damage the eggs

They have roofs and no they don't get any more hotter than the wood boxes just make sure there is a gap between the box and the wall and no heat is transferred to the box

solution to termites if you want to use wood.

wood that is treated with termite resistance
use cypress pine a naturaly termite resistant timber

Want wood but worried about mites?
Put a few good coats of paint on the wood nest box(will also stop the box rotting)

I did the second one but used the treated pine but that is a good reminder that mother nature has its own solutions

I picked up second hand commercial metal rollaway boxes and they are fantastic I would highly recommend them to everyone

$10 per box and they come in a 4 box group so $40 and no rust
