If you or someone you know has a 22 you could use subsonic ammunition. These are so quiet nobody would hear you dispatch a fox even in the city. Other than that you could hit it on the head with a long handled shovel.

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone with a gun which is obviously the quickest and most humane way, and I couldn't face a fox with a long-handled shovel even if it was guaranteed to kill it on the first whack.

Still looking for a way to get rid of a trapped fox. Among the new and novel ideas from friends are -
1. Ring the council dog catcher and ask them to shoot it.
2. Put it in the RSPCA overnight cage. They do after all deal with "all creatures great and small".
3. Deliver it to the local office of the Department of Primary Industries and if they won't take it, threaten to set it free out the front of their office, preferably with the TV news cameras there.

If you contact you local council ranger they HAVE to take it as its a feral animal and its their responsibility to remove it and they will or should.

Thank you JACKJAPS,
I think you're right. I'll call our council ranger (Central Victoria) on Monday for information about foxes that we might catch and report back here with their reply. I appreciate your interest. :-D

No luck with the council enquiry. Our country Victorian council is not licensed to shoot anything and they said most councils aren't, so that would apply in the city too. If something needs shooting, they call the police. And they won't take foxes away as they're feral animals and council only deals with domestic animals and stock. They also said they have hired out their cages to people trying to catch foxes, and not one of them had caught one.

Fox traps are a waste of time and money I think the best idea is from Kevin Butler http://www.weeklytimesnow.com.au/articl ... -news.html I went with the alpaca and no more fox trouble but my second choice would be the local shooters

kindKoop, your local Dep't of Primary Industries (DPI) or council should have contact details for commercial shooters. But if you want to pay someone to sit there all night waiting, you could be up for a big bill. Do you have a neighbour with a shooter's licence who is just as keen to see the foxes gone?
