The self feeders are awesome the rodents cant get in and you will save a good 30-40% less wastage

I've been considering buying one of those treadle feeders as my girls do like to flick their food everywhere. But the expense really made me wonder whether it is worth it. I can go through many, many 30kg bags of wasted feed before the feeder pays for itself.

What I have done in the interim period, and it works pretty well for my Australorps is take a 2 litre icecream container... the square type with the separate lid. I cut a round hole in the lid, about 9cm round which is easy to do with some sharp scissors because the lids are so pliable. To stop the big birds knocking it over, I placed a paver offcut at the bottom.

The container is then filled no higher than about 2/3 of the way so that the chicken needs to stick its head in. They still flick and sort through and look for the best bits, but nothing flies out unless it's filled too high by my overzealous husband.

Obviously this method won't work if you plan on leaving the chickens to it. We do top it up every day and about once a week, I empty the contents on the ground for them to use as a scratch, and refill the container with fresh feed.

My biggest concern, when I first tried this container out was whether the birds might injure their combs and wattles on the cut edges but this never eventuated. The cut edge is quite smooth and could even be sanded if you are concerned about it.

It works for me. Maybe it will work for some members here too. I'll post an image once I've resized the photo I've taken.
