I know from experience that a big bull bar on a landcruiser works well to run them down and knock them over and then the cricket bat to do the rest when you get them does wonders. This is my experience. You do have to be careful not to run them over or kill them, but hell people disappear all the time in my area.

i tie a dog up each night near the pens to stop foxes prowling but it would probably be a good idea for alerting burgos. grat info. leigh

It wouldn't have been such a problem back in my day. Back then the laws were enforced. It wasn't worth the risk getting caught so fewer people would have tried.

My day: not long ago

Bring back the cat-o-nine-tails I reckon and public lashings.

That and corporal punishment. I reckon they should bring National Service back in!

I just a have a dog, she does the job. When my fowl run around the backyard she watches them like a hawk, she's very protective of the new arrivals, haha

I did have one problem once with a local kid who tried to break into my aviary, but he's sorted!

If I wished to purchase birds and the seller would not give me an address, home number and only wished to meet in a park, what protection do I have?

I would not know the health conditions the birds were brought up in, and being a novice doubt if I could pick up on certain conditions, were the birds kept in humane conditions?? wouldn't know, even worse, were the birds stolen from a honest breeder?

I know it's a catch 20 but from what I have experienced with sellers, they have almost all been most welcoming and happy to show their birds and share a yarn or two, I love the friendly spirit of the people in the chook loving community.

Hope there are measures which can be taken to secure valuable stock, other then what you have suggested soozorps, I believe everything you have said has merit and I would have the same concerns if I was a breeder of chooks, just hope not to be alienated due to some ratbags out there.

Peace out fellow chook devotees

Just browsing the site, I recently noticed that plant material at Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens is now being data-dotted as is means of dissuading theft. I believe you can now give your details to the local constabulary, and arrange dotting of household contents. Will this work with poultry? I don't know.
regards
Russell

I have never ever heard of anybody stealing a chicken before!! Imagine that in a movie they replace the vault of money with a pen of winning chickens hehe. So if you don't sell the chickens you kill them or quarintine them for 4 weeks isn't that a bit harsh?
