Hi All,

Thought I would share some details of my system for watering/feeding.

I have just purchased the following for watering my chickens from the mains, composed of:
1. Mains pressure reducer ($77 + $27)
2. Clip-on nipples (pack of 5) ($8 + $2.50 shipping)
I'll need a little bit of retic piping too, estimated at probably $20, to finish off the system.

and for feeding:
Dine-a-Chook feeder (basically storm water piping with an nice opening) ($40 + $13 shipping)

Pics in a couple of weeks once delivered and installed.

Cheers,
Richard.

Does the system have to run off mains water or can it be used with tank water?

I believe the water nipples are designed to have a maximum pressure of 1.5 KPa (aka 150mm of height) so you don't want a very big water tank feeding into the system without some sort of pressure reduction.

Since I'm using mains, which is typically 300-400KPa (30-40m "height"), I'm using a serious pressure reduction regulator.

An alternative would be to use a holding tank of some sort with float ball valve that sits 150mm above your chook nipple height, but this may need to be cleaned regularly to prevent any algae buildup within.

I got it at www.bellsouth.com.au for the water pressure reducer. I spent 30 minutes hunting around and they appeared to have a competitive price (although perhaps the postage was a bit high).

Do you have to teach the hens to use the nipples? Mine hate when I just change the bowl they take a wide berth for several hours until they realise its not going to eat them

I "taught" three of the chickens how it worked. ie held their beaks up to it and pushed upwards to wet their beak. They automatically drank the squirt of water that came out. The "lesson" lasted about 3 minutes each.

After 2 days I removed the old drinking bowl and also observed the other untrained ones drinking from the nipples.

So you only had to show them once for 3 minutes wow I think mine would need a few lessons they are not so bright. Thanks

Can the nipple system be used for newly hatched chicks ??

I had ideas of making one with 2 levels of nipples - regular height for the adults and very low for the chicks, all part of the same system

regards
Vic
