Hi all,

I would love some info on what people consider to be the best diet for free range chooks in winter. My girls are loosing condition and I feel I should be feeding them something extra. Currently they are free range, with full access to my organic veggie garden where they access lots of worms and such. I also feed them twice a day with mixed grain.

Hi, Penny,

A bit indulgent but we've been buying eggs and giving the girls a mashed hard boiled egg and chook spice and a sprinkling of garlic granules for breakkie. There is a thread on chook spice in POULTRY HEALTH & WELLBEING INFORMATION CENTRE

More indulgence a little bit of spare cookeed minced meat if you and your chookies are not vegetarian.

Cracked corn is also good for improving condition and fattening up during the cooler wetter months.

Soaked chook pellets in warm water with a little bit of molasses.

A tin of homebrand fish based cat food is high in protein.

A tin of homebrand sardines for .69c at Coles too also helps improve condition.

Apple cider vinegar in their water 2-3 times per week.

All these help improve condition.

Also have you wormed your chookies lately?

Thanks so much for all that info. I gave them their mash this morning and will get the other things today. I do worm them regularly but I just got two girls from an egg farm and they are in pretty bad shape so need building up. I will hunt down the chook spice as well, sound fascinating. I do give my girls raw mince every now and again but will give the fish a go.

Thanks again.

Penny

Hi, Penny12,

This is my chook spice blend, just mix equal portions of the spices and add about 1/4 teaspoon to their warm mash.

I am going to try this seems I have trouble in winter with sickness so with any luck this will help. Do you give them the mash every day and just once a day?

I've been giving it every day and I have to say they are looking good and have put on weight. It's working for me!

It's pretty cold out there with minus temperatures...

My girls get a warm brekkie of mashed hard boiled egg, and mash and supper (just the mash) with chookie spice and a sprinkling of granulated garlic.

A bit of extra weight on the hens would be good
