Hi all,
I have finally concreted the floor of my chook cage. What do most people here put on the floor on top of the concrete.
I thought maybe hay or straw and clean it out say once a month. Cage is about 3m x 3m 3 chickens and they spend most of their time in there. I let them out only for about 2 or 3 hours a day.

Wood shavings or hay

Wood shavings need to be pet quality and or non toxic.

Hay gets mouldy when wet and can result in respiratory diseases in winter. It is OK for nesting boxes though.

Straw and sugar cane mulch are the best. Also a kitty litter tray or something similar with sand so the chooks can dust bath in it.

Just keep an eye on on their feet as they can get bumble foot with hard surfaces, and let they out to free range and feel some grass under their feet.

Do you soak it first bill? I was told the chook poo is too strong when fresh?

Chook poo has a high ammonia content and can burn vegetation.

Some people put their mucked out flooring directly on their plants and water it in others add it to their compost.
