Hi all, a have recently begun looking after 2 ISA Browns and a bantam. They all came from the same farm so they all know each other and seem happy to scratch around in the yard all day. This last Sunday one of my Isa's started laying her eggs but the other 2 haven't. Do they all have the same timeline and do they all need a separate nesting boxes or can they share. Not sure on age of the chickens either but was told 1-2 years old. Not concerned just yet but would like to know. chicken.gif

I have heard its usual that one nesting box is fine for five birds
Not too sure if all birds lay at the same time but different breeds do start laying at different ages
I myself have no idea about the bantam,

But Isa's browns should start laying at about 20 to 22 weeks

What I did notice with mine they did take a break after I got them that took a few weeks.

No they don't all start laying at the same time, and yes they would require more than one nesting box, 2 should be fine, the others should come into laying shortly the bantam may take longer depending on the breed.

If the wattle and comb are still a pinky red she's not quite ready but when she is ready it should become a bright red.
How many fingers can you fit in between her pelvis bones ( just below her vent)
If its two she's for sure not quite there but when she is most can fit three fingers inbetween the pelvis bones.

Perhaps also have a few dummy eggs in the nesting box so she can notice , And so the one who is laying can teach her.

Happy your loving this wonderful place I do too

Yay can't believe it but Ginger (yes I have named them) gave me her first egg just today. So I am over the moon that she has settled into backyard life and is feeling comfortable enough now to start her laying season. The bantam named Cara-Mel was also up in the nesting box so maybe it wont be long before she starts too. I do love my Chickens it's like therapy watching them scratch around. [smilie=a_rolling.gif]

Fantastic news. And it does sound like the third one is close to laying too. I know what you mean about chicken-watching therapy. I can spend hours doing it. They make me smile and laugh so much. All part of the fun!
