I just went to check up on the chookies and a black creature ran past me and hid,

It was at almost dusk and it came from the direction of the hopper.

If you can do not leave any food at night this discourages the rodents. I have heard of rats chewing on chooks and even killing them.

If you have a $2 shop they sell rat traps.

I take out the food at night because I had heaps of rats at one stage and that worked they slowly disappeared and they also then ate the baits so that was good too

No Rats get in our pen. :-D It's got vermin proof mesh & was worth every $ we spent to stop them little critters getting in.

Create a bait station away from the girls house so it encourages them(the rats) to eat there first.

Use those Talon blocks (they're in blue square chunks that you can get from bunnings) and put a couple in a poly pipe with one end blocked off & the other half covered so they have to go right in to get it but can't drag the contents out.

Talon is fantastic as they go away and die & they don't stink, as the talon has something in it that stops them from stinking when decomposing.

Make sure you put some water out as well, as Talon makes them thirsty & you don't want them then seeking out water only to kark it in the girls water.

Cheers

Will the pipe idea work for mice too. I've got a lot of native mice. They're really tiny.
