Finally, after decades of trial and error chook pens, I decided to line the inside of the pen with recycled powder coated colourbond sheeting, nice and far away from the girl's roosts...the outside is made of wood and cement sheeting but the colourbond allows droppings to just hose off or wipe off soooo easily. You would never have this type of sheeting without proper insulation as it can get cold in winter so i lined between both layers with proper inslation sheets. So warm and cosy and coolin summer.

Cost us $2 a huge sheet each..cheap as...here is a photo, ignore the lizard, he got in during set up, cheeky bugger.

Had to share xx Doolan

Hi Doolan,

What a great set up. I have been wondering if I could do something similar when I build my next one. I am trying to make the coop easily cleanable and mostly eradicate red mites. Have you had any trouble with red mites? I recently found an infestation in the joins of my wood coop. What a task to move them out.

Yeah Chicka-dee ..a giant blue tongue..stole some eggs before wire went up...all good now tho.... :-D

Chickababe...i rub the roosts with pest oil and rub dry...the colourbond wont allow the mites to hold on and the floor is cement that I sprinkle with Pestene powder under and above newspaper which i cover with masses of straw that I turn every few days....wash down on bright sunny days every couple of weeks...hardly any work..couple of minutes really..first time ever 52.gif

It really is great when you make a pen that is easy to clean. [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

I do mine evey week because I just love going down there and having the hens come up & talk to me & say hello while I'm doing it. Carmel my little queen hen always checks everything out first and talks. I know her voice before I even see her when I have my back to the door and she talks when coming into the pen inspecting what is going on. :-D

They do however run a mile when they see the rake come out.
