Does anyone here recommend the battery powered electric fence system to protect the hens coop from foxes and feral dogs? do they give enough boot to stop these pests? |

They are effective if the hot wire is appropriately placed. Setting it up and checking it can be a chore. If you have the option of mains powered energizer that is easier and cheaper in the long term. |

Battery powered units with a solar charger are certainly very convenient. I have used one for many years to control cattle and keep my dogs in the yard. The drawback is the cost of replacing the batteries. Even lead acid batteries are expensive. In periods with prolonged low sunlight the battery tends to become over discharged. In periods of prolonged high sunlight the battery is over charged. Both these situations dramatically shorten battery life. Probably energisers at the high end of the market have inbuilt charge controllers to remedy this problem. None of the cheaper ones do. |
