It has worked well for me for all ages and breeds as soon as they are able to eat whole grain. I feed whole wheat, meat meal, green feed and hard grit all ad lib. Layers also get shell grit and free range.
If the system suits it can greatly reduce feed costs as whole grain is cheap and stores much better than processed feeds. Also the birds are not consuming unnecessary expensive protein, just eating what they actually need.
