I want to use a rooster for breeding more silky bantams buy I live in the suburbs and I am not supposed to have a rooster. My question= is there a way to keep a rooster from crowing? I have heard you can put them in a box at night? Does that work? I would appreciate your advice thank you

Yep I put my Rooster in a well ventilated cardboard box and then in the shed. The 2 muffles the noise enough and you can't hear him at all.

Hi :-D
To crow a rooster has to be able to stand up tall and stretch his neck high. If you put him in a cage that is low enought to stop him standing tall he will not be able to crow.
Problem solved.

Ian Clayton

So I assume a low box would be ok at least that way if he did manage to crow it would muffled enough not to hear it?

Hi :-D

If the bird can't stand tall he can't crow. So put him in a cage or box relivant to his size. If the box is too deep cut it down to size. You don't have too worry about muffling the sound if you get the height right because he won't be able to crow.

Regards

Ian

The rooster I had crowed during the day too. A bit of a give-away. Our council doesn't object to roosters but do say to consider your neighbours. I'm sure if anyone complained I would have had to get rid of him. (I did anyway as I only wanted girls).
As long as your neighbours don't object and they can't hear anything while trying to sleep (mine particularly liked to crow at 3am :( ) you should be fine.
Fingers crossed.

Yes Ian's got it in one use a cage not a box and at night put a thin blanket over the cage. Most importantly make sure the cage in low in hight so he cannot stretch out to crow

I have decided to build a wooden box rather than use a cardboard box now I just have to get the size right so I am measuring up the rooster for his fitment I wonder if I will have to take an inside leg measurement har har

Making a wood box is a better idea for the long run but I would suggest you have a steel floor to make it easy to clean the poo off
