The only problem, Gary, is avoiding the "zap" yourself !!
Sometimes it's easy to forget the wires are there or to accidentally brush up against them.
It usually only takes 1 or 2 "heart-starters" before the warning sinks in.... -depends on how slow you are of course!!!

Are the battery powered electric fence unit any good for fox and dog proofing do they give off enough zap to scare them away?

Then again fight fire with fire. In other words get a couple of Maremmas ( stock and people guard dogs ).Blackouts don't affect them. Nor do wild dogs or foxes ( I have at least two fox skeletons in the paddock ). They work well in pairs.
PS. I've seen a video of a fox arcing itself walking through an electric fence to get to a chook then arcing itself again with a chook in it's jaws on the way out.(KFC)?

We had a small pen set up with an electric fence as our dog was pushing her nose on the wires. All it took were a couple of small zaps and now our birds free range around her, and she doesn't even look at them.

It is a small zapper run by a 2000w jump starter pack (The kind you use to jump start small cars - no good for 4wd's). When you run a piece of grass up the wire, you have to get pretty close (3inches) before you even feel the zap which is only like a bad static shock.

Once a dog has been zapped, they stay away! Our friends have a fence which hasn't been live for YEARS, and the dog still won't go any where near it... runs 50m to get around it!

Are there solar options with the electric fencing. Sounds like the answer to the neighboring dog visiting uninvited but the front fence is no ware near a power point and we don't have batteries to run it

Flessor,

I'm not sure about solar, but if you can get hold of a jump starter pack like I was saying, the battery pack in that should last a fair while (I guess it depends on your 'zapper' and how long a run you need). It's only sending out a slow pulse, not a constant draw of power. We had ours last a few months with a single strand running about 30m, and it kept the horse out too! You can get them for $100-$300 I believe from Super-Cheap Auto. Or a spare car battery if you have one. Once the dog knows it's electric, it will keep away.

Good luck with the solar! Let us know if you find anything!

You can buy cheap solar recharge units that keep the internal battery charged, alternatively you can buy a 12v solar trickle charger panel and attach to a small car battery that feeds the unit.

If it is possible try an use a main 240v hotwire fence I first tried the battery type and yes it worked but they [the foxes] kept trying but when I switched to mains power they stop trying why! well the zap they get is much higher and the affects are long lasting so they ready do remember and stay away
