My girls (and their blokes!) just love it when the dairy goats have been wormed and the milk is being 'withheld' from the fridge. Fresh goats' milk poured over poultry breeder pellets and a day free ranging throught the paddocks makes for very happy chooks. I haven't noticed any difference in the egg laying, though some of the boys destined for freezer camp are 'good doers'!

Jackie French says its ok to feed avo's to chooks, apparently its the leaves that are toxic. They used to dry them and mix them with the chook food to make it go further.
We had an avo tree inside the chook run, and I never had a sick chook. They won't eat it if they don't like it.Although, I have a friend whose chooks have eaten (and died from) elastic bands that the kid next door threw over.

I have been feeding my girls porridge ever since I started keeping chooks. I add garlic, herbs, usually marjoram, milk powder, fresh chillies or cayenne, linseeds, sardines or tuna, and a touch of olive oil, although I would use linseed oil if it were cheaper, to this I also add any food leftovers from the fridge, chopped into bite sized bits and recently was given some coarse organic polenta that I have started to add. I always serve it warm, its a great natural way to keep my girls healthy and I know for sure that theyre all going to eat some as they love it.
Theyve never been sick (touch wood) and Ive never needed to louse or worm my chooks with any chemical products.

I've been giving warm plain porridge or mash on the bitterly cold mornings.

My sister in law's late Granny used to add molasses to porridge and feed her chooks in the winter. Does any one else add molasses? If so what are the benefits?

Our chooks eat organic yogurt, cottage cheese and shredded cheddar as an occasional treat.

So would the porridge be good for a couple of hens getting over sickness?

Sure! Porridge is good at anytime-especially for convalesing hens.
Break up some garlic cloves on top of the porridge- both are great prevenative during winter
a natural antibiotic against chooky ills and chills!!
