I put this here in a new topic so as not to drag the "What have you aquired lately..." thread further off-topic.

those quail you have greenaus are king quail they are avairy birds(you can eat them and there eggs but theres not much meat on them)

Yeah, they don't look particularly meaty. But, I guess, LindatheVegetarian probably wasn't keeping them for eating. ;-)

I saw some eggs while I was there. Not particularly big, but worth a quick boil and send to school with the kids lunches. Is a minute enough?

Regarding the photos, Peter, both babies have moved on and I forgot to take photos earlier today. So now I'm down to just four, two of each sex, about five months old so should begin breeding soon. ...or... I might sell the boys on and keep the girls for eggs.

Will have to get some BIGGER breed quail for meat production.

A good educational experience.

Sorry to hear they moved on,
I am still looking forward to seeing photos.
i suggest getting rid of 1 male other wise they may fight and end up with bald heads.
As for boiling the eggs, i think its just a case of trial and error.

P.S I moved it to feathered friends because this sub-forum is more appropriate.
But thanks for not going off topic in the other thread;)

Peter :-D

Of the four adults? The five month olds?

If so, those were the ones in the Farmstock ads.

Do you still want to see more photos of them? Before they fly away or should I take photo of them as they disappear into the distance?

Actually, as if I need to do any more building, I'm thinking I ought to build them something more akin to an aviary since Stuart did correctly point out that is what they are..."aviary birds".

This almost certainly qualifies as a dumb questions, but...

Does the same thing apply as for chooks...best not to put brothers over sisters?

If I wanted them, I could get fertile Japanese Quail eggs for $0.60 ea plus postage. That's IF I wanted them.

With winter coming on and more pens to build I don't actually know what I want.

you dont have to worry about the photos,
I would keep them, because they make great pets, and like you said, the eggs will make great lunchbox snacks, as for a cage, many people use rabbit hutch style cages, or you can go for an aviary style, they dont need much room, so when you build it, the main factor to keep in mind would be accessibility. (you want to be able to clean it easily)

Anyway thats just my 2 bobs worth, any more questions, just ask.
