I have 5 young poults nearly 10 weeks old. One began showing signs of illness about 4 days ago and I isolated him and have given him some coccidiostat in his water. Looking a bit better and the poo has gone from all runny yellow to harder but still with added yellow instead of white. I still have him isolated and off the medicine...should I give him another couple of days on the stuff.

It may be blackhead, but I have never lost poults to it before and the fact that he is still alive gives me hope.

Has anyone got any clues. Is the yellow poo a definite sign of something. I have also had him on a homeopathic remedy for a couple of days which may have helped the poo situation.

Have they been wormed, Misty? I have been told that turkey poults are very prone to going downhill fast if they have worms.

No they haven't been wormed. I have never wormed my poults, but I will tomorrow - good time with a full moon about to happen! Thanks.

I'd tip blackheads but sounds like you have it under control. Keep him away from the others for several months or get rid of him as he will be a carrier ;)

The coccidiostat seemed to have done the job. He is completely recovered. Would he now be a carrier if it was blackhead - wouldn't he have just died?

Yes he will be a carrier, no they don't always die from blackheads and as you have found you can treat them and they can live long and normal life.

They have all gone on to grow and be healthy....but, my hen hatched 5 more 3 weeks ago and one just died today. Another is looking quite droopy. Taking them away from their group seems more stressful for them than just leaving them out there to free range and hopefully make it through. I am going out 3 times a day to give it water with the coccidiostat in it.
They share the orchard with the ducks, so are not crowded into a yard. They all perch in a large shed at night, but I guess that could be the source. I think, as a matter of course, I will put the Sulphaquin in their water from day one on a preventative dose. Previous years never had a problem...just lately.

Turkeys get blackhead from Capillary worms. Do you have youe poults around chickens? A good remedy for cocci and worms is copper sulfate. Dissolve one pound in one gallon of water ( this is your base solution ) . Mix one ounce of this into plain clean water and give as only source of drinking water for seven days. Do not use any metal containers with this mixture, use rubber or plastic. When you change their water pour the old copper water on pen floor. Works good and worms will not develope any immunities to it. It will also cure a mouth canker.

Hi Hero - how much plain clean water do you mix the one ounce of base mixture with?

My turkeys range the orchard with ducks and very difficult to give them their own water. The ducks use every bowl and although they don't poo in them, they sift through the dirt and foul all the water with all kinds of mystery items. I am wondering if that is what keeps re-infecting the turks. I have lost the 2 littlies, but the teenagers seem to recover after 2 days in the rehab centre with a bit of sulphaquin. The other three littlies seem to be okay and I have never seen the Tom take such good care of them before. He constantly sits with them and they all sleep under his wings on the perch. He even sat separately for quite some time in the yard with a very sick one that was dying.
