Hello,

New to the forum. We have a female cross bred bird whose mother was a guinea fowl and whose father was a Rhode Island Red rooster. There were a number of fertile eggs in the clutch but only one live bird came out. She is 4 or 5 years old now and is a strange looking bird (nicknamed the spotted hen). Likes flying high into trees and very occasionally lays an egg, makes odd noises which are not guinea fowl noises. Lives with a couple of chooks and is right at home. The mother guinea fowl was killed by a fox a year or so ago.

Question, is this cross breeding unusual?

The mother guinea fowl bird flew in many years ago and just lived with our chooks and made lots of noise. I was so impressed with her that I have always intended to get more guinea fowls but its still on my to do list.

Regards,
Aeolia

Hi Aeolia, WELCOME TO THE FORUM Hope you find the Forum Informative & Helpful. What you have is a "Guin-hen" the male is called "Guins"
Guineafowl are known to breed with and produce offspring from matings with chickens and these offspring are almost always sterile. The matings are usually from a male chicken and a female guinea fowl. The hatch rate is usually very low and the offspring are often weak rarely survive. Yes it is unusual in Australia but not in other countries like the USA, the fact she survived is the biggest hurdle. If you have any Photos we would love to put them in the Forum Photo Gallery, I'm sure averyone would like to see her. If you do please email to admin@peacocksaustralia.com

Thanks

Thanks. She appears to be very healthy and is having a good life and is quite independent. As soon as I can find an older photo of her, or take another, I will post it. She is a rather odd looking bird.

Can't wait to see a picture, has no idea that a chook would breed with a guinea fowl :!: its a shame it may not breed, what would it breed too anyway?
