Hi all,

we have inherited a female king quail who in our estimates is about 5-6years old. She has stopped laying eggs and appears to have gone through menopause. I say this as it seems that a surplus of testosterone, and a deficit of oestrogen has resulted in her gaining the facial markings of a male bird. How long do these little ones live for, and has anyone else out there had a similar experience with their older female birds gaining male features in their plumage with age?
Regards,
Calvin.

Just to expand, we have had the quail for three years, and the previous owner had her for at least two. She was a normal looking female king quail when we received her, and indeed laid some eggs when we first obtained her. after about a year, she stopped laying eggs, and then went through a gradual transformation in her plumage to that of a mixture of male and female traits. I have taken some photos to post, but can't seem to get the knack of uploading them. Will persevere though.
Cheers,
Calvin.
