I think our local council is really We are only allowed 4 hens in the middle of nowhere unless you are zoned rural and can have 75 chookies A Person must not, without a permit, keep on any land a rooster, goose, turkey, peafowl, cockatoo or galah or any other bird that is not a domestic bird on Premises in a Residential area. Farm animals must not, without a permit, be kept on Premises in a Residential area. Farm animals include: horses, cattle, donkey, mule, cow, bull, steer, sheep, pig, goat, ox, ostrich, emu, alpaca and any other animal kept for harvest of fleece, hide or meat; irrespective of whether the animal is kept as a companion animal. What if I want to keep more animals? If you want to keep more than the allowable number of animals on your property you can apply for an Animal Permit. Extract from http://www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/Resid ... y_property Even my Nanna can have 10 hens in inner Melbourne, a friend has 6 in Camberwell and other 5 in Ringwood, 5 in Monash, even 6 in Kingston!!! It is just ludicrous! |

It is so unfair as we live outside a country township and before the bushfires we were semi rural and could keep 20 hens and a rooster! |

However we did have to get rid of the rooster after the neighbour complained about the crowing at 4:30 in the morning. Guess I couldn't blame them |

I don't see why it matters if you have as many chickens as you want! The aren't noisy, and as far as I am concerned we should be able to have a rooster as well! I would much rather hear a rooster than a dog barking or a car revving its head off! Stupid councils! We are only supposed to have 5 chickens (country town) and no roosters, we have a 'few' more than 5 and we occasionally have a rooster that we are growing out to take to the auction or give away. Luckily we have good neighbours that don't mind but I still don't like the idea of risking it with a rooster. Why does everything have to be quiet anyway? I prefer to hear the world around me and know that I am alive! Why is it humans only want to hear other humans? Animals sound much nicer |
