Blak1, I am so sorry about the loss of Ranga.

I know exactly how it feels to be so helpless and watch it happen. I hope the others are okay. Do let us know how you go with them, won't you? Let's hope the 14-week mark losses aren't a pattern.

At least she was with you when it happened.

Hugs,
Mands

Thanks guys - kind words much appreciated - I had a howl last night  I kept her and have opened her up. Looks like something was wrong with her lungs and during her fit she had a heart attack. There were no worms in her crop / throat, but I think her stomach was a bit weird? greeny/brown stuff in there? I took pictures while I was looking at her innards.... Was worried it was going to be Mareks, but no tumours / lesions; liver looked normal and there was no loss of balance or splayed legs. So my conclusion is lung / resp infection that caused exhaustion & heart attack from exertion. I also have video of how Ranga was acting (the gaspy thing) before she deteriorated.

I've got the other 2 on some oxymav as Runty sounded a little bit wheezy tonight. I also noticed runty has a single lump on her back. I had a good feel and look at her skin (much to her annoyance) but there's only the one. She was eating normally though and not going the gasping thing, so will keep an eye on her. Big Bird is fine :-/ They're still in the little pen - away from the big girls.

I'll post again in the health section about Ranga. :( I hope Runty doesn't deteriorate - fingers crossed!

Thanks Doolan... Not heroic this time (I once ran into a burning house, but that's another story), just needed to know if I could have done anything else for her. The need to know helped me overcome my squeamishness, and I've butchered birds for the table before.

In this case, I don't think so, so I'm a bit relieved. I think she started getting ill while I was away on holidays, hid it well (as they do) and just went downhill this week.

Oh My Lord Blak

I am so sorry mate to hear about the loss of one of your babies.

Sounds like you did everything right so I hope you don't beat yourself up about it.

Well done for being brave and doing an autopsy.

It could have just been a genetic thing.

Again so so sorry for your loss.

Chicka-Dee

Disaster. 3 weeks ago a fox broke through 2 strands of the chicken wire where it met the ground and then bent in an 'L' shape outwards from the base of the run. 6 of my girls were killed. Turns out we used the wrong gauge chicken wire... Make sure you get the thicker wire.
We immediately bought thick wire and re-enforced the 2 sides open to the yard.... That worked for one night. Then the bastard fox dug from my neighbours yard, between 2 tree roots and killed another 3, dragging one away. That left me with one very sad bantam leghorn. She cried for a couple of days - we had her in the sick bay cage on our back deck. So sad. We thought we'd done everything right, but I had given up getting them out of the tree and into their house at night. :(

Anyway, hubby has now trenched the remaining sides (alongside the neighbouring colourbond fences) and used the strong wire - screwed to the colourbond fences, out along the ground and then buried straight down in a trench.

I have ordered a Wagners' auto door, and we'll be building a new house over the next 3 weeks. I have ordered a dozen Araucana eggs and will try incubating and putting some under the remaining girl.

It was horrible walking out in the morning with food scraps and not being met at the door... then having to pick up the poor bodies and bin them.

Just came home from a big night out and went out with my torch to check on the girls, thankful to see how peaceful they were..made a cuppa then hopped into bed and opened my ipad to read this very sad, sickening news... blak1.. I cant imagine how traumatic that must have been..that poor bantam must feel so deserted and freaked out...those foxes are so clever...if they wanted my girls i dont think there is anything i could do to stop them...my Staffy Ivy would give them a run for their money but not sure they wouldnt out fox ever her...feel sick thinking about it..can you let us know how the hatching goes and if the bantam is ok....hope she goes broody on the eggs..tragic..so sorry for you..love Doolan xxxxxxx
