When it flooded in Brisbane in January this year, we got cut off from shops for a week and also the power went out so no fridge or freezer for two days. We still had lots of eggs though! It's really important when you think about it to have sources of food in your own backyard, even close to the city.

With the cost of living now at an all time high make perfect sense to produce your own food so that is why we started with 5 children and a husband that all love egg we decided that chickens were just a must and that gave us the drive to then branch into vegetables and now fruit trees.

A slow but worthwhile process Wonda.
I went in reverse, moved out of the city and found a few acres with fruit trees established, need to add some variety this season.
The veg gardens were in just needed a clean up and replanting.
Brought the chooks with me, one of the advantages of purebred fowls, eggs and your mistakes for the table.
Had a few dairy goats so had milk, meat, cheese, yoghurt and butter.
So have added a few Dorper sheep, meat for the table and milk for cheese and yoghurt.
It can be a lot of work doing preserves etc but at least you know what you are eating and how it was produced.
The biggest mind shift is eating "in season", not just going to the supermarket and buying produce all year round.
This way everything revolves around the seasons, what you eat, the work required and the times you can take a break.
On a cold winters night to go into the garden and pick fresh vegies, in no time a pot of steaming fresh soup with as many vegies as you can pick, accompanied by a fresh loaf of bread and butter made with your own hand.
