My two pullets aren't roosting. They're cuddling up in the nesting box instead, which would be okay, except that they leave such a mess, and I don't want to have to keep changing the hay.

I've blocked off the nesting box temporarily, but I wonder if anyone else has dealt with this problem and found a solution.

Thanks,
Lauren.

each night put them up on their perch, until they get the hang of it, and make sure the perch isnt to high for them.
how old are they?

They're about 4 months old.

I did put them to bed properly one night, so I may have to keep doing that.

Can someone please look at my pics in the photo gallery and let me know if the roosting stick looks about the right height? I used a broom handle, too. (Now I'm second-guessing everything.)

ill have a look once their up.
It is never good for birds to sleep and excrete where they lay, it creates a harmful environment and houses all sorts of nasties

I agree with Peter, I had the same problem and I just kept on putting them on their roost and eventually they got used to it and now they just get up their as soon as they are put away.

Pic isn't up yet so i'll ask-is the perch higher than the nest box? If it's not they will roost in or on the nest box cos they prefer to roost higher as a natural defence mechanism against predators.

Yep, put them up every night, takes some a while to get used to it. The perch probably needs to be a bit thicker, try something 4 times the thinckness, does not need to be round. The broom handle requires a little balance and so they may be reluctant at first.

:)

I have old branches of trees in my coope for roosts (quite thick), i was told that they are the most natural type of roost rather than man made, my girls love them.. And also have them at all different heights as well... We made sure there were no nasties living in them before putting them in... :-D
