Yep but you may get an odd ball or two as she has buff or birch in her.
Cheers Drew

Which is more dominant in this case, The black (which is what I would have thought) or the partridge/birchin?????

Are both colours equally dominant?

Bloody Genetics, I used to know what was what back in high school but these days, sheesh...it just goes over my head. I remember the days when I tried getting into Gouldian and Budgie mutations and in order to understand mutations you must know your genetics. I gave up, these days I just stick to normal stuff. That's why I'm getting into Red Jungle Fowl and I have Bush Budgies and normal Java Sparrows. Oh yeah and normal King Quail. Actually, these days it is hard to get pure normal stuff, especially in common parrots that have many mutations like Lovebirds and Indian Ringnecks, even Cockatiels.

I have just posted a pic of a pekin chick I hatched (well, the incubator did most of the work but I got it out of the shell ;) ).

Its mum is a straight buff, and dad is a black/cuckoo-bred cuckoo. I thought this chick was a cuckoo when it was still wet, as it seemed to have that cuckoo spotting on its head, however when it dried I could see that it actually has a real 'patch' of yellow feathers on the side of its head.

My husband named it 'Phantom' as it looks a bit like the 'Phantom of the Opera' mask.

The rest of the chicks from that mating seem to be black or cuckoo (hard to tell just yet as they're only 4 days old). I did think I might get some buff, but now assume that buff must be recessive to cuckoo? Is that right?

It will be interesting to see how Phantom turns out - whether the black/cuckoo feathers take over the yellow spot, or whether it keeps a buff patch there. Has anyone else had a chick hatch that has a clear patch of odd colour like this, not just on the belly or wings?

I will update this with a link to the photo when it's up.

Deb :-D

You can get barring on black or on any other color, like buff.
Buff is wheaten based ( plus columbian Co plus other factors ... ) which should be recessive ( Co = hypostatic ) to extended black.
The barring goes on top of that.

Extended black is epistatic to columbian means: columbian can not express properly when your chicken is extended black based.
Columbian is hypostatic to extended black means the same the other way around.

Found some great info from the links posted in this thread. Thanks for sharing.
I'm glad I stumbled across this site....
Now I have the fun task of simplifying genetics for other family members.
This could be interesting  :-D
