Wow, No its way more complicated than that.

There is gold and silver, where silver is dominant to gold
You also need a pattern gene to permit patterns to appear, that gene only works in a subset of genetic backgrounds.
Then you also need some modifier genes to make the pattern appear as a lace around the edge of the feather.

So in non-white chickens if you were to mate a laced chicken to (say) a brown leghorn (which is the wild type). The F1 progeny would pretty much look brown or black, then if you were to mate these F1s together then about 1 in 600 or so progeny would be laced.

Hi all
wondering if someone can help with a genetics question.
Due to some deaths in my chicken family and a broody hen, I put my light sussex rooster in the pen with my egg layers to keep him company. Some spaces left in the incubator so in went light sussex cross lavender araucana hen eggs. All chicks hatched with grey/ silver stripey down and now at 4.5 weeks are white with black flights, columbian neck markings, spotted heads, pea combs and white legs with some darker underfluff becoming apparent.
I cannot upload photos yet as I do not have the required permissions.

So light sussex is eWh/eWh, Co/Co, S/S
lavender araucana is e?/e?, co/co, lav/lav. What is at the e locus in lavender araucana?

I would have thought the chicks would have wheaten down colouring. Why were they silvery?
Thanks for any replies!

Is your sussex rooster carrying platinum by chance?

Henk69 reporting for duty. Platinum should not be used for lavender. Platinum=heterozygous andalusian blue combined with heterozygous dun (chocolate).
