Can anyone tell me how to stop chooks eating their eggs, well feed with constant supply of grains and pellets, let free range during the day and also given food scraps.

Any suggestion on stopping them from eating their eggs would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello DusteePintos, WELCOME TO THE FORUM hope you find the Forum Informative & Helpful. One trick to stop egg eaters is to use Arificial eggs (Plastic) most Produce stores sell them for around $3 or you can use Golf Balls. The key to this is you will need to collect the eggs twice a day or more if possible but leave the Artificial eggs there 24/7 After about 7 days you can remove the Artificial eggs. Make sure you have a good bedding in the laying boxes, we use Straw approx 4 inch thick, this is very important. The likely culprit is a hen that is not laying & usually an old hen. Do you use Shellgrit or add skimmed milk powder with drinking water? we would recommend you offer Shellgrit 24/7

Hope this helps

Thanks

They get shell grit with their grain. They have an old dog kennel for laying in, softened with barley hay.

I know when we were little mum and dad used to make fake eggs with something that tasted horrid??

But I think my produce place has those plastic eggs so will pick some up to try next time I am in town.

Hi DusteePintos,
Had the same problem once and yes traced it to a hen that was not laying, however she had taught some of the others her bad habbit  , so did all the recommended things ie.artificial eggs etc. but as I was away most of the day I could only collect the eggs once I got home late afternoon, by which time some had been eaten.

So I laced some eggs with pepper, chilli, tobbasco etc.etc. went to the pens in the morning and whilst they were all hanging around waiting for me to feed them I dropped a few laced eggs on the ground and let them consume them which they did for the first few days and about day 3 or 4 they would not touch them and I never found any more broken eggs in the nest boxes. :-D. You waste a few eggs initially but in my case it solved the problem.

If you are at home all day and can collect eggs three times a day it helps a lot, whilst you are trying to solve the issue. Hope you get it sorted.Best regards,
Snowball :-D :-D :-D

I had that problem once and just made sure that the eggs were collected as soon as they made their noise to say 'ouch that hurt'. That way they don't have enough time to get interested. I also made sure that they were in there home only to lay and then were shut out for the day, making sure that food and water was outside the house as well as inside for later. Hope this helps.

Cheers Damaris
