I have a young layer.
She is a GLW cross
She is only about 5months old.
Her eggs have been a bit small considering new to laying.

SHE has gone clucky.

She tries to get into a nest with anyone who has an egg to sit on.
She was in a nest yesterday with a duck and a chook then this am with 2 ducks in one nest.

Yesterday she found a grub or two on the ground and was trying to get the two ducks next to her to eat them.
She was and is bock bocking all over the place.
I have never had such a young broody before. OH BOY.

What is the youngest broody chook you folk out there in chook land had ???

Thats me! Chicka-Dee wave.gif

Yep my Sussex went clucky around six months & I was shocked at that, but 5 months..... [smilie=a_holycrap.gif] , you hold the new record [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

My Clara goes clucky every chance she gets. So far I've let her raise 2 broods and out of 7 babies, 6 have been boys  , but I have heard that broodies raise more boys than girls.

Cheers
Chicka-Dee

Of the last 3 broods I have only had girls hatch. I have lost a few to not hatching though.

I wish I had your luck my current ratio is 60/40 and the 60 is cockerels so not the best results so far at least the dogs will be happy with fresh chicken for dinner.

In my experience over a few decades I find the younger the pullet goes clucky the better and they will turn into your best broody hens in time

Quite some time ago I gave a roo and a red hen to Charlie. He than gave it to some one else then back to Charlie. He then gave her back to me.
She has been clucky at least 6 times in the last 18 months. She has a chicken now. She would be at least 5 yrs old now maybe older.

Yes, since I have had her back she has hatched about 15 chicks. She would only have 2 or 3 at a time considering hatch failures. Only 1 or 2 roos in her time so far.
