I would love to know your thoughts on which type of chicken breed in the best laying hen.
The 1 that lay the most eggs on the most days of the year

You have to go for the commercial breeds I would say.

I think Marans are extremely hypo sensitive and extremely temperamental to their surrounds in regards optimal egg laying. Anything minute change and affect their laying.

All of these breeds are heritage breeds which do stop laying for about 3-4 months while they moult, so if you want eggs all year round I would suggest getting some commercial breeds in your flock (Isa Browns, Utility White or Black hens) as they lay all year round.

I have a mix of Heritage & Commercial's. my best egg layer laid 332 eggs last year and my worst (which is an old Plymouth Rock) laid 58!

I would always recommend Isa Browns for an all year round egg layer as they just don't stop. The one bad thing about them is that they are bred to pump out the eggs and then to drop off the mortal coil after about 2 years of laying. :(

My girl who laid 321 eggs last year is now starting to go down hill and I really don't expect her to live past Christmas and she'll be 2&1/2 by then.

But....she has made me over $200 and she only cost me $18 + food.

I'd say she was a fantastic investment & has given me so much joy & affection & you just can't beat that [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

Cheers
