Thanks for the support, I was just having a feeling sorry for myself day, the injured hen came back. As badly injured as she was, amazingly enough she is recovering, I have her in a separate hospital pen. The rooster is ok, just look odd with no tail feathers, but as someone said, they will grow back.

I have 15 chicks that are growing in leaps and bounds and I look forward to "knowing" how many hens to roosters I have ended up with, so far I think at least 5 are roosters so time to start thinking about rehousing them.

All is well for now, I sometimes just feel so useless in this battle with the natural elements but that is the circle of life I guess.

Cheers

After a devastating weekend I am again wondering if it's all worth it. I lost 5 chicks. I let them out for a little free range in my small garden, one got caught up in bird netting and strangled. The other four ended up as snake food. I really believed that I had my chicken cage secure with small gauge wire all around but I missed a section of the roof and a carpet python got in devoured them. Just when I was dealing with all that. I found my poor Nugget Jr dead. I have no idea of what killed him there were no visible signs of injury.

I suppose it's all part of life but I can't help thinking. WHY ME??

Oh my god...what a devastating time you are going through.
I can't imagine the angst that you are feeling even when I lost so many to foxes and neighbours dogs.
We shall all be crossing our fingers for you...I am really sincerely hoping that you will have some good luck very soon.

Where do you live?

Gosh you must all think I am the worse chicken carer in the world. I moved my chicks to the big hen house because I thought they would be safer there than in the small cage, over the next week I kept an eye on them checking them morning and night and then after 5 days I relaxed thinking them safe, think again.

Snake tracked them down and got another 5. Of my original 15 chicks I have 5 left. I stopped feeling sorry for myself and went around my hen house with a vengeance, my neighbour and I have made a hen house/yard so secure, I doubt even a mouse could get in or out.

Luckily one of the chicks I have is a rooster, who can take over from his sire and grandsire, a new Nugget the 3rd. We shall go on.

Hey no way do we think that you are the worst chicken carer in the world.
We all go through periods of loss and devastation.
I know because I have too.
What is worse is just giving up without giving it your best shot.
So glad to see you are staying with it. Like I said in my original reply, it will be worth it in the long run.
Good luck and enjoy your chooks.
