I'm a newbie to chicken world & would be grateful for any help on 2 qst:

1) Does anyone have any feedback regarding purchasing day old chicks from Peak Poultry (also known as Darling Downs Hatchery)?

2) Is there any great advantage of chicks coming by courier as opposed to collecting them from the farm?

Thanks in advance :)

Howdy citybear wave.gif

1) Darling Downs Hatchery is where a lot of people go to get their chickens vent sexed, so while I've never bought chickens from them, it would definitely be a good assumption they should be the ones who would be able to sell you a majority of girls rather than boys.

2) I always feel it is more advantageous to view the birds at the premises of the seller you are going to buy from. Buying chickens should not just be transactional; buying eggs yes; baby chickens No.

But that said.......if you see chickens as just a bird that provides eggs, then sure, get them boxed and sent straight to your door. :-?

Thanks Chicka-Dee. What things should I be looking for at the seller's premises?

In saying buying chickens shouldn't just be transaction, do you mean that you should chose your chicks just as you would chose your puppy or kitten?

Your local flea markets are also a good place to pick them up and cheap

Going to the sellers premises.......lets you see how they treat their animals, how they are housed, what sort of conditions they are exposed to & the general heath of the birds.

Going to the sellers premises.........allows you to see if they are living in over crowded pens with very little feed & dirty water and soiled bottoms, which could mean they're not wormed & riddled with lice, or if they are truly cared for & loved like these beautiful creatures should be.

Absolutely, your head, heart & gut should be involved in purchasing chickens; not just your head, which is what transactional purchases are, because the person is not really engaged in the subject they are purchasing, because they are purchasing it with out any emotion.

When I buy a puppy (I would never buy a kitten - urrrgg Cats), I think about how this little animal is going to fit in with the rest of my family. If I just purchased a puppy as a transaction I could just be getting an animal that is vicious towards the rest of my family & will totally disrupt the peace & harmony we have. Same for when I buy chickens :-D

I have been to a breeders premises who had a very "pretty" website & sprouted all the right words on it & then I got there to find a compete horror story; birds with dirty bottoms, feathers missing, bleeding, sneezing, smelly, with no food & dirty water.

Oh & I was actually talking to someone this morning who went to the hatchery you were discussing below & apparently it was not good, so you need to go & check it out yourself, because hearsay is just hearsay, until you've seen it for yourself.

Hope this has helped.

We collected our chicks yesterday from Darling Downs Hatchery and were happy with what we saw. Strong legs, clear eyes, clean bottoms, kept warm. They took time to show us around & showed our kids the various ducklings plus the larger birds they have which our boys enjoyed seeing. My questions were welcome and if I need any more advice, was told I was welcome to call them.

Everyone in the family is enjoying the antics of our girls!
