It's been over a year since I have been on this forum, as we have been "chookless" all that time (our 2 chookies were killed by the neighbour's dog) :( Well, we are ready to become chookie owners again! th_clap.gif New, very high and sturdy fence on the "dog" side. New chook pen fashioned out of an old bird aviary plus the old timber chook pen, with perches made out of our daughter's old playpen. Wire replaced where necessary and new wire laid just under the surface for a metre right around the entire chook pen to keep foxes out.

Now all we need is the chooks! Previously we had brown laying hybrids from Wagner's in Coldstream (They call them "Gingerhams", I think they are New Hampshire crossed with something). Lovely friendly girls who laid well, but two of our chooks were EXTREMELY broody, and it was a real pain trying to snap them out of it. So I am looking for advice as to what breed to get. We want chooks that are friendly and healthy and lay well, and that are NOT broody! Any suggestions? I had been thinking of Australorps, but I have read they can be broody.

Also, any suggestions of where to get chooks (preferably 10 to 12 weeks old)? For a variety of reasons I do not wish to get them from Wagner's again. We are in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne, close to the Dandenongs and Yarra Valley.

I have one Australorp and 3 other breeds and I will only get Australorps again. Great personality, cope with heat very well and super reliable layers. She has only gone broody once in four years - and only 24 hours in the dog crate cured her of that, so it was easy to snap her out of it.

I really recommend them. I am in Sydney so can't recommend where to buy - but you could try farmstock.com.au which is how I found our 4.

All the best

I love my Australorpe. I also have 2 wyandottes who lay up a storm but are prone to going broody apparently, but haven't yet. My buff orpinton has gone broody twice.

Until I lost my last flock (fox attack th_Noooo.gif ) My best layer, hands down, was my plain old leg horn. I have just hatched a Legbar because I wanted some colour. I also have in the mix some Plymouth rocks, Aracuanas (they lay a bluish egg) some Blue Langshans and a leg horn, however they are only a couple of days old so we shall see how they go!

We recently rescued some ex battery farm girls, they just lay and lay and ever go broody and are really friendly.

Silver and gold laced wyandotte, Buff Orp, Black Austalorpe, 4 recently rescued "raggies" (battery hens) one rescued battery hen who survived the fox attack that took away my whole last flock and now TOTALLY rules the roost. Oh and two Alpacas, and 3 dogs.
