I prevent the problem by lining the trays in my incubator with non slip matting (can buy the stuff in supermarket and $2 shop real cheep in rolls) Comes in all sorts of colours and it is the stuff that has little bobble type make up and holes in between. Good stuff Jo-chicken |

Do you know what causes splayed legs? In regard to crooked toes at one time it seemed to me that they resulted from the temp in my incubator overshooting in the final days before a hatch. I had reasonable success getting crooked toes straight by having them housed on fine mesh until about 4 weeks. Jill |

I think a lot depends on the cause. I had one chick recently that was eating well and apart from the badly aligned leg seemed fine. Further the condition had not been apparent in the first few days. It responded to gentle manipulation, so I concluded that maybe it was a dislocation, anyway it's now fully recovered. Good luck PL |

Thanks for that I put the brace on but didn't help so it was too late. The chick is getting around so I will see what happens |

The leg would have been set after 5 days you need to put it on straight away |

Can this happen in turkey poults or just chooks and peacocks? |

It can happen in any species so if you see a problem you need to check your incubation and hatcher temperature and humidity, substrate in hatcher/brooder & hen's diet- any one of these may be responsible. Genetics can also predispose some lines to this and other problems. Hope this helps Parvo |
