Post subject:  My first show

Hi everyone,

Well, I've bitten the bullet and entered 5 pekins in a show this coming weekend.

Getting them ready is a big task, as we only came back from our o/s holiday a week ago and because I couldn't have them caged while we were away they are all in "free-range" condition.

I've picked the ones that will be easiest to prepare - unfortunately the white one was not a contender with her chocolate, mud-stained foot feathers!

They have all now been in show cages for about a week and I have been feeding them pullet grower in an attempt to fatten them up a bit. As we only have 3 days left I'm guessing I don't have much chance of putting much more condition on them.

I have two hens inside at the moment in front of the heater, drying after their bath. I don't think there is a more disgusting smell in the world than warm, wet chickens with dirty bums!!!

Oh well, we are just entering for the fun of it, and to get some feedback on the ones I want to breed with this season.

I'll let you know how it goes! ;)

Good luck Deb.

I'm only assuming (again) but I reckon you could probably have cleaned the white girls feathers somehow. I wonder if washing liquid would have worked. Homebrand smells pretty nice.

But, since you're only entering for fun, I'm sure it is best not to risk irritating her.

Thanks Charles. I did try a nice stain remover that I have for white/grey horses, however that turned her a nice shade of purple!

I think I'll stick to breeding dark colours somehow.

It's the pekin one at Maitland Showground. Judging starts at 9am Saturday, then auction 10am Sunday. Don't think I'll sell any of mine as I've sold just about all the chooks I can at the moment.

Thanks guys. I know it's a big one, CL - nothing like having a National breed show on your doorstep! I'm not worrying too much about it - I know my limits at the moment as far as proper preparation etc so I'll just have fun (and I am not even planning to buy anything at auction.......so far).

Thank you Ian. I don't have any flyers this time around! :( Having been away until a week ago I'm not very organised.

Speaking of feed & water, I am taking my birds over about 7am on Saturday (judging starts at 9am) so I guess I don't leave any feed or water in with them until after judging has finished?

I remember reading somewhere that it is best to not let the birds have a full crop during judging as it distorts their front shape. Is this right?

And one more quick question if someone can help me - what is the best thing to wipe over the wattles/combs to make them nice and shiny (but not greasy)?
