Not off topic at all really [maybe ‘left of centre’ ] but not off topic - as I agree some points can and would carry across to other breeds -
my main 'bugbear' [as sooooooooo many know] is the selling of chicks fresh off heat or birds that are gangly teenagers = HOW can anyone say “Oh that bird is going to be good” OR “that is a cull” hence the growing out and culling stages = let me say again = I believe CULLING EQUALS KILLING = do NOT present culls to the public as you ARE doing the breed in question a DISSERVICE!!!! Newbies don’t know good from bad and if they acquire ‘bad’ they are potentially breeding MORE bad ! right up until they put the birds in a show and get shot down in flames when they see GOOD birds next to their ‘not so good’ ones = have seen this so many times [sigh]
If you are not sure which to cull – ask someone trustworthy and knowledgeable to help select – and if unable or unwilling to kill the birds that are culls find someone that will do it for you – yes you might get a few dollars for the culls selling them BUT HOW MUCH HARM ARE YOU DOING TO THE BREED??????
How bad a name are you ‘cultivating’ for yourself – many have ‘gone down fast and hard’ after a year or so of selling culls. I tire of receiving phone calls and/or emails and being asked “do you know this person? I have been told by others they sell culls. I don’t want culls.” Well I cant answer those types of questions as it is very unethical to do so – it is not my call if someone else sells culls = but I can be VERY vocal about NOT selling them in the hopes that one day - - - - - - - - [Sue is daydreaming about exhibition chook nirvana - - - - - - - - ]
