If I want new fowls I ONLY buy from the breeders NEVER from auctions not just because of disease risk but also the over inflated prices for pet quality fowl usually

I know a DPI worker and yes I have seen him at local sales – not in an official capacity as such but there and he has eyes

Not sure but have been told (chinese whispers) that in some states you have to notify no matter the disease if more than 20 birds are affected (makes sense to me) - I think this would be more for commercial breeders (supermarket chooks) but as they only live on average 6 weeks I cant see any reports happening!

All states and territories if ILT is confirmed it is mandatory to notify, also Newcastle Disease is a mandatory = in both these the property is put into lockdown and every bird destroyed if Newcastles, not sure abt ILT
(have friends on the Central Coast NSW that in the 1970s lost all their birds to Newcastles including their 40yr old pet Sulphur Crested Cockatoo)
the DPI also set traps for wild birds and destroyed them - they had to to contain the disease = several properties were effected in that outbreak, thousands of birds killed, a number of livelyhoods wiped out in the blink of an eye

Since then vaccines have helped to control Newcastles but ILT still crops up every now and then

The last auction I went to I saw 4 hens in 2 different cages that were sick and I got the cold shoulder when I mentioned it so I stay away from auction now

I have been to a fair number of club auctions over the years, and as a matter of course club officials and committee members normally go around the pavilion and check out all the birds to see if any are looking seedy or unhealthy. Any bird that may be cause for concern is removed after a quiet word with the owner.
