depends on the breed some bigger birds are really good with the washing ect.
it dose not really matter on bantam or not.. just depends on your interests.. what you would like to show.

When my youngest son started out 7 years ago at age 5 we felt it was best he start with bantam breeds as they were easy for him to handle he has since moved on to std breeds. I believe a factor is the Childs age and confidence levels.

Hi Youngster,
I agree with Fluffy Feet, go with what interests you and sparks your imagination.
As a general rule though it is best to start with something you are confident in handling and preparing.
I have Malays which are huge, but docile and require little preparation.
On the other hand White Wyandottes either lge or bantam require a fair bit of washing and preparation to put them down in a show looking thier best.
If you choose Pekins then the husbandry and show prep are a constant commitment to have them looking at thier best.
I see you have Belgians, they are a good choice to learn on, showy, easy to prepare and get into the Major awards often, usually strong classes, so you know if you win and get into the Majors you are on the right track with your breeding, preparation and showmanship.
Just enjoy it.

If you ease into it you'll learn along the way , OEGs are great to prepare and look spot on in the pen , I used to show them and they were a good bird to show and I learnt heaps from showing them , Australorps are a pleasure to train and the preperation on them is easiser than say a sussex , But the large can be heavy to prepare on your on until you get used to them ( we only have largefowl), I would suggest a Very good quality Australorp Bantam Cockerel is the way to go if your serious about starting out in showing thinkerg.gif Something will come up for you that catches your eye . Up here the three main breeds are Langshan ,Langshan and Langshan ;)

Sebright is also a good starter breed for exhibition. Easy to handle and groom and they too look great in the show pen
