Just wanting to see what people think of this, but how about a show for chooks for kids only where everyone got a 'prize'? The idea would be to show any poultry laying hen who worked in your garden and gave you food...our company is thinking of running something like this in the spring/summer. The idea is not about breeding, but about keeping hens in suburbia or suburnian blocks, cared for largely by kids....

Thats a really great idea! There must be a lot of future chook owners lost because the backyard chook can't be shown and kids have lost the potential for getting excited or passionate about chooks.

What are you going to base the prizes on? Will the kids have to wash, prepare and pen the chooks or just bring them?

I think if you made it clear adult involvement was ok you won't have the kettle of fish being opened where some feel the child is involved less than the parent.

Maybe it could even be a family thing so all kids in the family right down to the littlies and their parents bring in their favorite chook, or best coloured chook etc and they can all help with the whole process?

Mine would both love it. My daughter who is 10 shows some pekin bantams but my son who is 2 loves his little x bred bantam hens and would gladly carry one around and show you its feet and comb and eyes and what it eats.

Great idea!
