ag shows never have poultry on Friday night. It's almost always a saturday only show. Exhibitors are often allowed to pen birds on Friday night but the pavillion is not (AND SHOULD NOT) be open to the public. There is nothing more annoying as an exhibitor than having the aisles filled with people milling arround when you are trying to get all your birds penned. On one occasion i was actually pushed out of the way whilst trying to pen a big wyandotte rooster. I was furious.

Ag shows also usually have a limited number of fowl and they are usually only the common breeds. If you want to see an impressive line up of birds i would try the Rosewood Poultry Club show. It's on next Sunday at the Rosewood Showgrounds.

yeah that would be frustrating but perhaps they need to advertise when people will be able to view (or not view) cirtain animals. I would have been very annoyed if i went down on friday as the sole purpose of the trip was to see different breeds of chicken.

it is common knowledge and advertised in the shedules that the poultry show is on Saturday only. Most breeders pen on saturday, the minority on friday evening.

Despite having a few chooks, I consider myself a member of the general public...ignorant of showing, ignorant of schedules, ignorant of ...anything that never interested us before.

Schedules do not magically appear in every letterbox nearby, let alone 20km away.

Other than Blackbutt Show a couple of months ago, I had not been to ANY Regional or Agricultural show for 20 years (Mackay when I was 14).

I just assumed (wrongly it seems) that just as the Monster Trucks were there the whole time but only performed at certain times that chooks were there the whole time but only judged and awarded ribbons, etc on Saturday.

I apologise for my extremely gross ignorance of what day things happen at shows. I should be taken out back and whipped...though I probably wouldn't enjoy it as much as some. ;-)

well i beg to differ. I do not think you will find any agricultural show that has livestock competitions on a Friday night.

Some of these posts have got me quite annoyed. I don't know what people expect. I know the people who organised and ran the poultry section at the gatton show and they are genuine nice people who are passionate about poultry. They sacrificed a lot of their own time to print shedules, send them out, collate entries, allocate pens, be present for anyone wanting to pen their birds on friday afternoon, be present for all of Saturday. They really don't deserve any criticism. I really don't know what you expect......do you want them to read your mind and send you a message saying "poultry can only be viewd on Saturday"????? it's like turning up at the movies and expecting what you what to see to be playing when you want it to be!

Hang on... I just checked. All I said was...

There were none (or so few we weren't even allowed in) when we went Friday evening.

As you may recall we were going to go as a family on Saturday (afternoon in a navy APF bucket hat). Unfortunately my circumstances changed (considerably) and I and my four children managed a very brief visit on Friday evening to give them some joy in an otherwise awful week.

FWIW, new friends of ours in the Gatton area show poultry. He manned the gate and when we entered and I mentioned going to see the Poultry he may have said something like, "It's not ready, but they'll let you in for a look".

Perhaps if I had mentioned his name and asked nicely instead of being meek and mild and , they'd have probably said, "Sure...but don't spend all night in here". ...or not. :-D

I'll have a chat with him tomorrow and let him know that my innocent comments got me in trouble. I'll see if he can smooth things over with all your mates, Darryl.

as always it seems that electronic conversations get misconstrued and out of hand. All I am saying is that there are a lot of people out there who put a lot of time into shows behind the scenes. They always battle with low entries and seem only to recieve negative comments. It would be good if sometimes people gave positive feedback.

As always I do apologise for my part in this. :-D

I appreciate the effort that goes into arranging various events and like many others perhaps I should be more vocal in my gratitude. We all like a bit of praise some times.

All I originally meant to say was exactly what I said. When I went (Friday night ) there was nothing to see...yet. With me avoiding rides at any cost and having only extremely recently even gone to a show after so many years and being new to chooks, my only interests were... Will there be chooks? If I let the kids go on a ride each, will they let me drag them through the poultry pavilion? ;-)

Due to my lack of knowledge, I assumed there'd be chooks there the whole time.

I will know in future and stick to Saturdays. I wish I'd somehow managed to do 50 billion things and still gone on Saturday.

According to the ride operator on the ride my two younger ones went on, apparently Saturday at Gatton is usually slow (ride wise at least) so it wouldn't have been a particularly uncomfortable environment for me under the circumstances.
