I think Rick Kemps books are Great , I saw a standard on the net for $180 so I'd definately be going for the Bellsouth version ;)

having said that, i recently had birds disqualified by a judge who did not know the standards and i was really really peeved! As a general rule of thumb club shows and feature shows have judges of a much higher calibre than local agricultural shows!

I hope you corrected them mate , I think it is very important that the judges judge to the standard , and not to what they like , Even though I do not show much , I read a lot and love reading , My Heroe is Peter Smith , and his thoughts are exactly that , Judge to the standard , each judge may interperet the standard slightly differently , but ....The standard is still the standard . and they should know their stuff if they are judging .
I still think you should put your Orps in a show lou , and Hopefully you'll get a nice helpfull judge who knows his orps and will try to encourage you in a nice way , even if they have a few little faults , If all of our birds were perfect , we'd all be bored , and have nothing to talk about
It's our 100th annual show at Nanango next year and I am going to try to encourage all APF members to travel and support our show , we are hoping to get a very experienced judge who judged at Caboolture last weekend , and he is keen to help us out , He is one of the older judges who has helped me , I love talking to the judges even if I'm not showing .get the standard ,and put them in a show even if the judge won't help , some of us will try to help , we all can learn off each other I believe .

To enter birds, wouldn't you have to have them there the day before. This year did judging start on Friday?

I have The Sussex ,RIR,Pekin and Australorpe, But I can't Email them I'm happy to go through them with anyone who is interested in them , Especially the sussex .

At Nanango the birds need to be penned py 8 am on the saturday ;)

I will start a new thread for it as I don't want to take away from the
"Breeds standards for Dummies" But I think country shows are a good place to start , if you get a nice judge . I owe a lot to some of the judges that told me nicely about things I need to concentrate on .
Their is no need for anyone to rude but constuctive criticism is ok .
