HI guys,

I am a real novice when it comes to breeding poultry and I want to breed along the Australian standards lines for all my chooks, not just the light sussex.

I have taken photos of the first 2 light sussex I have bred, 997 and 998 in my gallery. They are about 24 weeks old now. I think they are quite nice birds. Can someone tell me if I am moving along the right track please? Do they meet Australian standards for showing and breeding? I know it is a bit difficult to tell from a photo but if I have any obvious faults in my birds I would like to know.

I have not been able to find written standards for light sussex to date but have ordered a book written by Peter Smith in the hope that will help. I have found local libraries do not stock good reference books on poultry and I have to go to the state library or the Uni libraries.

I have the "Australian Poultry Standards" put together by the Victorian Poultry Fanciers' Association, withic is in hard back, conatins photos and standards for every breed. For Light Sussex they state head and hackles should be white, striped with black, the centre of each feather to be entirely surrounded by a white margin. Wings ; white with black in flights. Tail and coverts black, and remainder pure white throughout.

Thanks again jo-chicken. It sounds pretty good then as I have achieved that so far. :-D :-D

much prefer the first female, much better marked ----they both have good long backs , the lighter one appears to lack a bit in the breast----can't see the heads clearly in the shots-----will pm you with what info I have, not the written standards but what to look for, what to avoid and breeding hints, cheers p
