Pinion is the way to go it’s a "one off" and they soon forget the trauma.

Hi,
one of my Muscovy ducks now has her second brood at about six weeks. I let them out for a bit of a pick, and don't know if something startled the mother or she was just testing, but she got up to 3 metres and flew around in a bit of a circle for about 10 seconds. I read somewhere it is better to pinion birds when they are young, and to have it done by a vet. So I either keep her in the pen of clip her feathers as I have done with the other bird.
regards
Russell

Does it hurt the duck to have a wing Pinion or do they use anesthesia Can they be done when they are adults or do they have to be babies

I have a friend whose bull terrier pup, with the best of intention (if dogs have intentions) tried to help round up three of their chooks, unfortunately only one survived the catch and gently carrying.

im getting a bully, they're so smart i know i'll be able to train her to be gentle with my duck. my last bully was (after some training) my rats best friend. they used to cuddle on the couch and fall asleep together. considering they were bred for rat hunting back in the day, i think i did pretty well!

i love a good menagerie :-D

While we are on the matter of showing ducks, what can you use to whiten ducks feathers? I hear people saying corn starch but just don't see how that would work and I don't want to use soap because ducks die if they dry out from the soap. I have a Silver Appelyard drake that loves mud and he has gotten his white wing feathers and white face feathers dirty. Anyone have experience in this or know what I can do?

Most mandarin ducks shown are pinioned so the would be the same as clipped I would think I would still show a duck that has a clipped wing as you only lose a few points at worst
